Nanny Laws: "Who is the state to tell you how you can and cannot raise your children?" asked Robert Best of Ventura, state coordinator of the Smoker's Club Inc., a smokers' rights group. "There's a fine line between protecting my child and moving in to raise my child," added Best, who is not a parent. "A car is private property. ... What will they do next, say you can't smoke in your home if you have kids in it?" Even if smoking around children is a bad idea, it isn't the government's job to stop people from doing it, said Walter Williams, a conservative commentator who has written about the nanny state. "If we justify things on the basis of what's good for people, there's no end in sight," said Williams, an economics professor at George Mason University in Fairfax, Va. Williams, a smoker himself, asked if government should require an 8 p.m. bedtime for children, or educational television over video games.

AMA Ignores FDA Commissioner's Concerns; Suggests FDA Tobacco Legislation Will Save Millions of Lives; Offers No Explanation for How. By Michael Siegel. If this is to be a legitimate public health policy consideration and not merely a political maneuver, then the Congress needs to be informed about the debate raging in the public health community about this approach to regulating tobacco products, as well as about the specific drawbacks of the approach and of the specific provisions of the legislation that were inserted for the protection of Philip Morris' profits. |

Forgetting the consequences of totalitarianism. By Ralph Conner. Where will we go from here? Will Big Tobacco be replaced by a black market and the gang violence that follows? Who's Your Nanny?
By Jacob Sullum. As meddling scolds, Democrats and Republicans are equal offenders. Broadly speaking, Democrats want to protect you from the physical threats posed by habits such as smoking, overeating, and crossing the street while listening to an iPod. Republicans are more interested in protecting you from the moral threats posed by temptations such as drugs, gambling, and pornography. Between them, they've got you covered, body and soul.

Regarding the FDA Tobacco Legislation. Written Statement of Michael Siegel, MD, MPH, Regarding the FDA Tobacco Legislation - Submitted to Senate HELP Committee. The one thing you will never hear the supporters of this legislation do is estimate the number of lives they think this legislation will save. All they can do is talk about "countless" lives being saved. And they are quite correct. The lives are countless. You cannot count them because they do not exist. |
