FDA tobacco legislation is on hold for now. Should Congress eventually approve it, the Bush administration has signaled its clear opposition to the legislation.
Current SCHIP Program to be Extended to 2009. Veto Override Attempt Appears Unlikely. December 17, negotiators agreed to extend the current SCHIP program through March 31, 2009.

Employers around the country are looking for ways to lower the cost of employee health benefits and encourage their employees to lead healthier lifestyles. George Koodray, New Jersey State Coordinator of The Smoker's Club, asks, "Why is it that there isn't some sort of consideration for those who drink alcohol to excess, or use drugs, for that matter, or engage in other unsafe practices? That can involve all kinds of things, from parasailing to motorcycling. It opens up an entire, unlimited universe."

 Surgeon General's Misrepresentation of the Truth Leading to Public Distortion of the Science Regarding Secondhand Smoke. By Michael Siegel. The deception only hurts the anti-smoking cause. It makes those of us who support smoking bans look like liars and it casts all of what we say - even our conclusions about the effects of chronic exposure - into public doubt.
Pfizer anti-smoking drug under FDA safety review. An early agency assessment "reveals that many of the cases reflect new-onset of depressed mood, suicidal ideation (thoughts) and changes in emotion and behavior within days to weeks" of starting treatment, the FDA said in a posting about the new review.
