 Michael Siegel. How Money Has Destroyed the Tobacco Control Movement. Back when the tobacco control movement was largely unfunded and was run by committed local volunteers, I lamented that there was not more money available for tobacco control programs. Well my wish came true when the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation stepped up to the plate and threw in millions of dollars to establish the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids and the Attorneys General were enticed into signing the Master Settlement Agreement which brought in millions of dollars to the American Legacy Foundation. Well it turns out that this was actually the worst thing that could have ever happened to the tobacco control movement. Money corrupts and that's exactly what happened to the movement. It was all about money and prestige and basic principles were forgotten. The grassroots social movement that tobacco control once was has been destroyed.
California Tobacco Control Program Wants More Money. But Can Higher Taxes Really Eliminate Smoking Within 5 Years? Like we've eliminated crack cocaine, car theft, and armed robbery, I suppose. If only government cures were as effective as they say.
South Carolina Ends funding for anti-smoking. At least a half-dozen states have reduced funding for such programs in the economic downturn, but South Carolina was the only one to eliminate it this year. South Carolina and Connecticut are the only two states that spend nothing on prevention, according to the national Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.
Causation. The story: The smoking ban in Wales "caused" a 13% fall in heart attacks from October to December 2007, compared with the same period in 2006. The flaw: The ban began in April. So did it also "cause" the rise in heart attacks in the first few months after the ban? And presumably it "caused" me to spill my tea. For that happened during the smoking ban too.
