Supreme Court Strikes Down State's Law to Diminish Internet Tobacco Sales to Teens. Justice Stephen G. Breyer said the restrictions were a clear violation of federal law and could lead to a "patchwork of state service-determining laws, rules and regulations" that Congress meant to forbid.

 UK Licence to smoke proposed. Smokers could be forced to pay £10 for a permit to buy tobacco if a government health advisory body gets its way. "He is openly bragging that he wants to make the form as complex as possible to fill in." Forest spokesman Simon Clark said that when the cost of administration, extra bureaucracy and enforcement are taken into account, "the mind boggles."

 Stamp Out Cigarette Taxes. By Gary Nolan, Citizens Freedom Alliance. Increased taxes on cigarettes may sound like a good idea, but in truth they devastate the poor, hurt local businesses, and result in diminishing returns. Will a well-meaning government official decide to institute a tax on high-fat foods or whatever the next enemy du jour may be?
GA: For the first time in five years, state lawmakers are looking at raising the tax on a pack of cigarettes by one dollar.
Anti-smoking movement goes too far for one physician. Dr. Michael Siegel is worried. He’s concerned that “the anti-smoking movement is increasingly becoming more extreme” and “getting out of control.” And he’s started an organization to counteract it.

 Dole swipes at Dems on tobacco, defends children’s health vote. Dole, a Republican who is seeking a second term this fall, said that measure would harm the economy of North Carolina — the nation’s leading tobacco-producing state. “To fund it on the back of North Carolina’s economy — and especially on the backs of the tobacco industry — when there are other funding options, is unfair,” Dole said in a speech to the Tobacco Growers Association of North Carolina.
