"I was once a soldier, I knew the risks and accepted them
when I joined. Likewise Police, Firefighters, Coal Miners, etc…
all face risks but chose to accept them. So why can't
bar staff choose to work in a smoky pub?"
- Phil Williams | A sad farewell to a friend. Ban Damage. By Phil Johnson. The last few months cost Rui a lot of money to stay open, all told, about £750 per week. On the day he called it quits he had sold 4 pints of John Smiths in 6 hours of opening, how sad an end is that? For all those who endear themselves to the likes of ASH, CRUK et al you ought to hang your heads in shame as we (people of choice) say farewell to a wonderful publican, a man of the world, a man of the people and a people's man, for you have destroyed a perfectly good business and a mans financial stability through your zealous hatred of all things smoking. You couldn't abide the thought of choice so that people like Rui could run his business the way he knew it should be run. Home Smoking Bans: Tacoma, WA group pushing for smoke-free apartments. "This is political correctness run amok," said Gary Nolan, U.S. director of the Citizens Freedom Alliance, which advocates for smokers’ rights. "They’re taking away the rights of the landlord. We have a republic, and they’re telling this guy what he can do with his private property. These people should be ashamed of themselves." Landlords have the right to declare their apartments smoke-free if they want to, Nolan said, and that’s the way things should remain. MI: One group claims banning cigarettes bans freedom. American Legion Post 444 in Baraga says taking away their cigarettes is taking away their freedom. "Smoking is a legal activity," said Legion member Joseph O'Leary. "Like it or not, tobacco is not heroin. It is allowed as a legal activity and to prohibit it on private property, we think it's unconstitutional." So what are they doing about it? Well, they're ignoring it. Members were lighting up at the post earlier today. After years of battling for freedom, these veterans intend to continue doing just that. NY: Cig-taxed NYers run for border. Tax-choked smokers are fleeing over the border and onto Indian reservations in search of discount cigarettes and sending Gov. Paterson's anticipated tax windfall, well, up in smoke. SC: Lancaster County plans for smoking ban possibility.
SC: York Co. votes on smoking ban changes, Council keeps amendment alive. Under the proposed amendment, smoking would be allowed in nonprofit private clubs such as the VFW and American Legion and for-profit clubs. All must collect annual dues, cater to members 21 years old or older, create a governing body and bylaws or constitution, post smoking signs and ensure that all members and employees acknowledge in writing the danger of tobacco smoke. Scotland: The smoking ban resistance, Freedom-2-Choose. UK: New poster to print and use: Pubs Need Smokers.
UK: Smoking and Live Music. Banging on about the Ban. Watch: Gwen Olsen, Former Pharmaceutical Industry Rep. Pharma Not in Business of Health, Healing, Cures. Comedy: Watch Neg's Urban Sports: Speed Smoking. | | Retrospect:
