Hawaii raises smoking age to 21. Alarmed at rising teen e-cigarette use. Hawaii's lawmakers are alarmed at the growing popularity of these battery-powered vaporizers, which deliver a mist laced with nicotine, the active drug in tobacco. Though the high-school smoking rate plummeted in the late 1990s, there hasn't been much change in the past four years, according to the CDC. Though cigarette and cigar smoking is down, e-cigarette and hookah use is way up. But now, in a victory for anti-smoking advocates, Hawaii's teens will have to wait a few more birthdays before they can buy cigarettes of any kind - electronic or old-fashioned. The hope is that many will never pick up the habit at all.
WA Proposed Smoking Ban in Parks: The ACLU and the Low Income Housing Institute are opposed. "While the Low Income Housing Institute (LIHI) is a fervent support of public health," that group says, "the ban on smoking in parks is a classic overreach and an offense to social justice." The homeless advocacy group Real Change has also come out against the ban. She acknowledged parks staff "observe more people that are homeless and people of color in our downtown parks,” which is where enforcement of the new rule would be concentrated. LA FIGHTING BACK: The Revolt Of New Orleans Business Owners Finally Begins. Over 50 business owners in the French Quarter and other parts of the city have signed on to a Civil District Court lawsuit which questions the legality of the business regulation, saying that the smoking ban is too vague and broad. The business owners who have decided to fight back include the owners of Harrah’s Casino, Pat O’Brien’s, Lafitte’s Blacksmith Shop, the Tropical Isle and restaurant owners from Broussard’s, Kingfish and Cafe Maspero. The French Quarter Business League has also signed onto the suit against the city. VT City tries to stay clear of smoking issue: Board President William Notte said that the city had banned smoking in city parks, but saw this as a different situation. E-cigarette company files suit against state of Indiana. Derb e-cigarettes says new law will put small companies out of business. Inside Derb e-cigarettes in Clarksville, owner Troy Leblanc is preparing for an uncertain future, now that Indiana's House Enrolled Act 1432 has passed. Since there is much unknown about the new devices and health consequences surrounding e-cigarettes, litigation is not unexpected,” Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller said. Report: E-Cigs Attracting 'Nicotine Naive' Consumers. Cowen and Co. reinforces traditional tobacco's staying power. "Not surprisingly, it is younger adult consumers that are driving this trend," she noted. "Among all 18- to 24-year-olds we surveyed, 35 percent were non-tobacco users — and among vapers, a remarkable 45 percent are non-tobacco users." D.A.R.E. Gets Owned by Marijuana Satirical Article. This article has been on the D.A.R.E. website for over a month and it appears that its satirical content is not enough to motivate D.A.R.E. to label it as such or remove it from their website. Instead they continue to present it as fact in order to promote a war on drugs agenda which has come at the cost of many lives, while prompting an ever-increasing militarization of American police forces. Anti-Smoking Website With Porn Link: The link was discovered by officials Monday afternoon after the office of the county executive contacted the Health Department to report they'd received a complaint. According to St. Louis County Health Department spokesman Craig LeFebvre, LetsFaceItSTL.org was the victim of hackers, though the anti-smoking site had already been slated for removal before the obscene link appeared below its logo. Worker fired for disabling GPS app that tracked her 24 hours a day. "This intrusion would be highly offensive to a reasonable person," lawsuit says. Welcome, High School Freshman! The data is so overwhelming, in fact, that the American Academy of Pediatrics has come out against using such testing as a cornerstone of school drug policy. Moreover, such a policy is likely to encourage high school students to ingest some potentially very harmful substances. As we have observed with the rise of new ways to get high. LGBT Protections: Wyoming town passes LGBT protections, nearly 20 years after Matthew Shepard murder. "And I would really encourage other communities across the state to follow Laramie's lead," Artery said. Stink! Your eyes will deceive you. Follow your nose.
